*NOT TURKEY RELATED*....Black Hills questions

Hello all, my wife has family around the Spearfish, SD area and instead of having their family reunion in Oklahoma (where we live) this year, they're having it in Deadwood, South Dakota. Unfortunately (for me), the date is July 16-20 so any chance of sneaking some turkey hunting in is long gone by that time. However, I'm an avid shed hunter too and nature lover in general so I'll have a couple of days to hike around and enjoy the black hills. I have a couple questions for those who may know,

What can i expect the weather to be like around mid July in the hills?
At that time, how tall would the grass normally be at elevations where elk and deer sheds may be laying?
Is there a good population of elk on public land within an hour of deadwood?

I'm from Southeast Oklahoma and I've never been to any place like that, so I'm not sure what to expect. I'd love to find just one elk shed for my collection and just experience something new. I'm going to use this couple days as a chance to get a feel for the area and gain some familiarity for a future turkey hunt. Thanks  for the help!
