Eddie makes a great slate no doubt about it!

Footballer Mark makes a KILLER persimmon slate over glass. He ran the Wynne side by side for me last year.......could not tell a difference.

X2 on this. Eddie's slate is great, but so is Mark's. I have both (Pecan double slate from Mark), and like them equally well. In fact, Mark's pecan slate purrs as nice as any pot I've heard - minus a dedicated purr pot.

One of Mark's sound files:

Lonnie Mabry cedar w/ wood soundboard
Lonnie Sneed hot hen w/ wood soundboard
Mike Yingling sappy walnut w/ slate soundboard.

All are mellow and have a traditional slate sound.

I can't speak for the call makers calls except Lonnie Sneeds Hot Hen.  The Hot Hen has the least volume and is the mellowest of all my pot calls.  I believe the pot is laminated cedar and poplar.  I could be wrong but that's what it looks like to me.

The pot wood and sound board would be a starting point.  Cedar, cherry, and walnut calls are the mellowest of all my pot calls.

Eddie Wynne  persimmon slate.
Bob Fulcher,  Shadetree Callers, slate trough.
Mike Yingling slate over slate
These calls have that old school mellow sound which the birds like. Have had excellent success with them.

I know you said you found one, but both Spring Allure and Mabry slates are "mild" sounding

I've have a Mike Yingling slate over slate that plays real mellow. Defiantly has a unique sound. Love this call and is always in the vest.

Good luck finding one.

Lonnie Mabry slates are the best old timey hen sounding slate I've played. That being said I haven't played the Wynne Persimmon but have heard nothing but great things about it.

I know Jimmy Schaffer last fall reconfigured his slate pot design and did one with a wooden soundboard that is flat Miller for that similar sound you're after as well.

Gotta agree with you on the Lonnie Mabry slate with a wood soundboard its a great call.
