Quaker Boy field grade boat paddle???

I have a Quaker Boy field grade boat paddle long box. I am wondering if its suppose to have a spring around the screw that holds the lid to the box like all of the regular box calls?

Lots of guys on here that have forgotten more about long boxes than I'll ever know, but I think most of them are made without using the spring so that you have more control over the lid.
