Called me one within spittin' distance this morning!!

I got home from work this morning around 9:30 this morning. I decided to go behind my house b/c I've been seeing some strut marks in the corner of this field. The wind was blowing 15-20 so I just went where I'd seen those strut marks and started cutting on a box call. Did I just hear a gobble, I cutt again. Yeah, I heard a gobble. Closer. Barely sat down and I saw him come in on a trot. His head was beautiful deep red with accents of white and blue. Then I realized when he got about 20 yards, jake. He gobbled 15-20 times from when I first called till when he walked away. He made a little circle and hit the field behind me. The hunt lasted less than 5 minutes start to finish. Question, I don't think he would have been gobbling like that if big brother was around what do ya'll think. This is the first turkey I've ever seen back there. I would have stayed a while but I had to go pick my toddler up from preschool. I forgot to mention I saw a huge coyote in the field on the 4 wheeler ride back there. I didn't squeeze the trigger, although I could have but it was one of my most exciting hunts of the year! Forgot to mention, I tried to get him to fan out, to make sure it was not a longbeard with beard rot. He never fanned out though. I've never seen a jake with blue and white coloration in the head like him. All the ones I've seen are deep or dull red. Don't think it was a gobbler do you?

It was probably a jake.

you can sometimes tell by the way they gobble.... but i was fooled about two weeks ago by 4 jakes... i figured they were jakes the way they would all 4 gobble at everything i threw at them, but their gobbles didnt have that distinct broken retarded sound that most gobbling jakes have.... i called them up to 20 yards and other than their short beards and broken fans, they strutted and gobbled just like mature birds....
jakes can fool you sometimes!

dixiedeerslayer, yeah I've heard jakes gobble before. It sounds like it's breaking up or something or half-gobble. He didn't sound like that.

I call em super jakes - I have had birds with jake fans, jakes beards and nub spurs come in struttn and gobbling like they were the boss gobbler. So you cant always tell just by the fact the he is not struttn or gobblin.

I would love for some of you guys to hear the super jakes gobble around here. I would love to learn how to tell the difference because I cant. Sometimes yes all the time HELL no.

youth hunter up in NY went out with my buddy and killed a super jake on Easter.. bird had 5in beard and a whopping weight of 19.5lbs Gobbled his head off (literally, took a load of hevi at 15yds) he came in with two toms that hung up out of the kids range and he still gobbled full, strutted, and had a colorful
but had the jake fan and jake spurs. most jakes have that broken choked off gobble, wont strut in front of dominant toms, and heads are dull red.. but every now and then you get a super jake that thinks he's a tom

i have a similiar scenerio. i recentely killed a double bearded jake. that dude got me good. all i saw was the big bright head walkng away from me. clucking and picking at the ground. so therefore couldn't see a beard. blasted him at 60 yards to turn out he had 2 beards, and a full tail fan. buet yet 1/2" sprs. and then this past saturday season has been rough, i got to my favorite spot in public land, in the afternoon right after a hellious storm, called and sit there for about 10 mins, heard a cluck directly behind me and saw a big white n red and i didn't pull the trigger because didn't want to use my 2nd and last tag on another "accident" jake. 20 secs later he went over the hill, and bam. gobbled like a mature gobbler. story of my life.

I've been fooled by several jakes. Called one in last year that had a questionable gobble but was drumming his butt off. I clicked the safety off when he was drumming for several minutes behind a downed tree. I was very shocked when he stepped out and had a short beard. If I can't see a long beard or spurs, I don't shoot. Sounds like a lot of fun. It's awesome to have turkeys at home!!!
