Is the any 'real' difference between sound quality between lynch box calls made in MS and Al or vintage and new calls...thanks

doublespurs21

there shouldn't be.  all made from the same material , using the same patterns and such...

Rumor has it that the quality of the earlier calls was better.

The earlier calls were made from better wood. The older calls have a better sound IMO. I've had a few in my hands. Hunted them years ago.

You'd be surprised!! Play one of the ones made today!!!
Even though they are made the same, someone has to tune them!!! That's what's lacking!!

Yep.

Most any production call made today and over the last 30-40 years will benefit GREATLY from a couple minutes with a screwdriver.  I tune EVERY production call I buy.  Customs................no.  Never.  I feel that whatever sound they come with is tuned from the ear of the builder and THAT is what truly makes them custom.

I think THE WOOD IS DIFFERENT NOW
Back in the day you had more old growth laying around
Now the demand is so great it is kill DRYED and the tress don't have time
To grow to there full growth, you don't have tight growth rings

I've had 2 lynch 152 rasp hens and a buddy has one. All about 15 yrs old. And they are awesome.

The older ones are definitely better than the new. Not that the new ones are bad. As production box calls go, they're one of the better ones. But, they're not the same as they used to be.

How do you know an older call from a new call? What should I be looking for?

Thank you, Gerri

The wood used in the earlier calls may have been stored and dried differently too.  It may have been cut, stacked, rotated, and allowed to stabilize and air dry for up to 5-6 years in those days.  In the present, the wood may be freshly cut and pushed through a kiln with no time to naturally stabilize and dry.

Wood's acoustic properties change with age and generally get better if not neglected (like being overly dried or exposed to too much humidity).  That is why 50 year old acoustic guitars sound differently than new ones and sell for a premium.

I remember that Lynch Foolproof from Liberty, MS calls used to sell in K-mart in the early 80s for about $13.  Those things sell for over $50 on e-bait, and have gotten substantially higher in the last 5-10 years.

I bought one a few years ago from the successor in interest to Allen Jenkins, I believe it is Lynch Calls, LLC.  I compared it to two Liberty boxes that hunting companions had, and it was not as good.  I tuned it to those calls with sand paper, elbow grease and time, and got them to walk off and listen to the A-B operation of the old one and new one until the new one sounded good enough.

One day one of those hunting pards and I went hunting and he discovered he had left his vest at home; he usually carried it every day but had taken it out and forgotten to put it back in the truck.  So I handed him the newer Foolproof and let him have his fun with it.  He called in a hen with it and did a great job, they fussed and fussed at one another, she would come in and look at us, walk off 25-30 yard, they'd fuss at one another again, and she would come back.  That went on for 30-40 minutes but the gobbler was hung up and he and the other hens in the distance never would come see what the fuss was about.

My partner naturally prefers his old Liberty box, but he was pleased and impressed with the way the newer call worked after we tuned it.
