Last week, I was calling to a very vocal but 'hung up' gobbler in front of me. Suddenly, I became aware that birds were walking up behind me, and when they were at about 20 yards from me, I heard spitting & drumming. Apparently they had just spotted my decoy which was 20 yards off to my left. After a few minutes of stretching my neck to the left , I saw 2 silhouettes turning and moving away. I swung around, and spooked them. As they ran off, I was able to clearly identify the rear bird as a jake. I could not clearly identify the lead bird, however I suspect it was a gobbler or another jake.
Is it possible for a jake to spit & drum or would this verify that the lead bird was a mature gobbler?
