New farm bird

Thanks to the members fir the advise.I got this bird on a farm i've never hunted.I did not call this bird in, he had a hen with him, but he was interested, and that's why i was able to sneak him.Great end of season hunt.

.          Thank you.It was one of those hunts where I was lucky with the terrain.I went in in the dark, and had no idea how to hunt it.When it got light, I realized I was in a bowl, with a real hen, on the hill behind me, and gobblers 1/2 a mile ahead. So I got as close as I could, and hunkered down, and called.

Thanks for the comments.It was a good season.I got 4 toms, but only one was called in.I learned some new things.Every year i get better, and i enjoy it more when i get birds. I've learned from being on this forum.

Now that you are on the board on that farm, if you have some spare time go sit out there for a sunrise or 2 or 3 and listen to the farm come alive and to get a feel for the lay of the land and how the birds move around on it.

There's no pressure on you to tag a bird now and it's a great way to start getting ready for next year.  Once you get a good knowledge of the property it is always 'fun' to see how many different ways the birds will outsmart you by doing something you didn't expect.

Always good to get between them. I am trying to do that more often instead of just calling in blind hope. Now I just have to get out there.

I was down below the bird, on a hillside.He would not come down the hill, I didn't know he had a hen, but I figured he did.I could see him up on top strutting, and I figured it was a flat field up there.So when I didn't see him for 15 minutes, I snuck to the top, and there was a big tree in the perfect spot.I got behind that tree, and he was in full strutt, at 50 yards or so.I emptied my gun on him, and got him after he ran down the hill a little ways. Cool hunt, very exciting, and not typical. Now I know where one of the strut sites is, and it's perfect for a bow hunt.I don't know what they do on that farm in the fall.One more thing, I was on a different crick! It was dark, new farm, and I was on a different crick than the one I wanted to be on when I looked at it a week earlier.Luckily, I was still on this guys place!
