It's been cat and mouse with this bird from the Iowa opener....
I've been to embarrassed to tell the story but here goes....
Opening morning...twilight...birds are hammering...hens are chirpping..
I'm sitting in the blind ready and pumped!!! DSD's are out...first time hunting over them by the way...
Birds fly down 20 min before sunup...hens are on the way to me with this gobbler in tow...strutting and gobbling the whole time...i put out a couple scratches on the call I got from you and it was a done deal...the hens were right on them...one came up and just stood there next to Peggy-O...looking in the same direction, trying to figure out what she was looking at!!! Next thing the gobbler pops out of the creek and head right for Rubin (the jake decoy) and Cherise the breeder and he proceeds to kick the snot out of Rubin!! Spurs him beats him with his wings and knocks him over and then keeps beating him down into the creek! Then Rubin rolls down into the creek and the gobbler puts his eyes on the hens...I proceed to draw on him...have everthing lined up and I'm super pumped..gonna fill this tag before sun up!!! I then let the arrow go and I hear a strange thump that shouldn't be there...then I see the tom jump and I hear an arrow hit a tree about 50 yards away! The gobbler just kinda walks off in a hurry before I could get another shot. I'm sitting there wondering what the heck...then I notice the blind!!! A perfect shot...the blind in dead and bleeding and doing the flop!!
Not really...I now have a perfect broadhead cut right on the seam of the lower lip of the blinds shooting port changing the trajectory and it lost a ton of energy!!! To crazy...I was just a little too excited and too close to the front of the blind!! Another 1/4 inch higher and I would be telling a different story!!!
