French Gun and The Flaming Turkey

The author of The Flaming Turkey refers to his turkey gun as "French Gun" does anyone know the make and model that he is referring to?  I think he at least mentions the make in the book, but I can't remember what it is.  I do know that he was using a 12 ga.

That's it!  Can't find much info on one, but pics appear to look similar to an 870.  Wish I knew more history behind them.  I am guessing that they are no longer manufactured.
