After nearly two weeks of very little action I finally got my first one of the year this morning . Went back to the spot I had hunted opening morning on some public land and for once I had this spot to myself . I got around close to where I thought they would be roosting and sure enough at about 6:15 I heard one start gobbling . He was gobbling a lot but when he flew down he sailed all the way off the mountain and into a green field I thought because right after he got silent in the tree I heard him gobbling way down below me . I packed up and moved around the logging road and back down to where I thought he was at . After I got away from the creek where I could hear better I could  tell he was in the grassy road that leads up to the field . I got set up again and after about 15 or 20 minutes of soft calling with my Twisted Sister he finally committed to coming back up the ridge . At about 45 yards he got spooked a little so I let him have it with a #6 Longbeard . 9 inch beard and 7/8 inch spurs . Not a big one I know but I was sure happy with him after the way my season has gone .

CONGRATS 6shot!!!  It's been a very TOUGH year where I hunt in Eastern NC.  Very tight beaked, not much gobbling and gobblers aren't responding to calls.  I normally limit out but it has been very frustrating this season so far.  Again CONGRATS on a fine bird and  :wagon:

Congrats on your bird. As mentioned it has been very tough this year as well for me. I am in eastern nc and hunted last two weekends and not heard a single gobble or seen any birds....  Not sure if the crazy weather we had earlier messed with them or not..  Trying again this weekend..

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.
