With the 2018 season set to start with the youth hunt on 4/14, and the terrible weather forecasts for the upcoming days, does anyone have any tips for the brave ones set to hit the woods? I have heard that birds are getting very active in the southern portions of the state, but not much news from the north yet.

Hey ogreknux,

I hunt Wisconsin too, Door County, and have seen Turkey in all kinds if crappy weather. I hunt the thick cedar and pine woods and sheltered sides of bluffs and ridge lines when it's blowing and snowing. Usually see game. My cams have captured toms starting to move/strut recently even with 8-10" of snow on the ground. That said, we're looking at 2 feet + of snow this weekend, sooooo who knows what they'll be doing. I guess time will tell my friend LOL.
Good luck!

I hunt near Wittenberg, in Shawano county. As of 7am, 12 inches was already on the ground. I know a few kids who were supposed to be out this weekend, but us mean parents said "eff" that...lol... I personally have tags for the 1st and 4th seasons, so hopefully it starts to warm up and melt this white crap... good luck out there.

Ya, we've got over 12" as well. Saying another foot before it's over. Good luck to you and the youngsters. And stay safe on the roads.

Tough weather conditions for the youth hunt for sure! Also, not ideal  conditions for the 1st. Period. I was disappointed when I did not draw the 2nd period and got the 3rd in the Black River Falls areas, but I am rethinking that.

The area I hunt was at 22.1 inches at 8am, with another 10 to 15 inches coming... apparently I'm going to need to use the snowmobiles to go hunting. I sure am glad I bought that extra tag for week 4 now, as week 1 might be a total bust.

On Facebook I saw a picture of a dad and son hunting Iowas youth season in a ground blind with the Mr Heater going full blast. Don't know if the boy scored or not, but give dad credit for getting him out. Snow and cold but they didn't stay home!

Like you, I was bummed when I got 3rd week in Door County, but with this storm dumping over 2 feet on the white stuff, it might work to my advantage. Will be throwing on the snow shoes and checking my cams later this week. Will be interesting to see what's happening over the next few days... Will post up my findings!

Digging my winter camo out of my deer hunting totes too LOL

At 8pm, 29.9 inches in tigerton... ummmm... maybe I should just cancel my vacation for this week...lol

Or you could sip bourbon inside by a nice fire ;) .... The birds will start moving if/when the snow crusts over... maybe lol

Now that the  blizzard is finally past, we had a total snowfall of just over 30"... temps to be in the upper 30s to low 40s for the first 3 days of the opener... time to start planning out this hunt and figure out what the hell to do.... maybe skis, snowmobile, or snowshoes will be added to the arsenal....
