Fixing a striker tip

I'm losing my mind trying to get a Woodhaven flared birch striker to call properly. When I received it the tip was not cut right and was deformed. So I took it upon myself to try to even it out using 220 grit sandpaper and think I did a pretty good job rounding it out. But now the tip is too smooth and will not bite into any surface I try it on. Any tips how I should go about this to get it to bite again?

Put a piece of sandpaper in your palm and push the end of the striker in the end. Give it twists in the same direction. This creates a circular pattern on the end and should grip. You can try a slightly larger grit too.

Rough grit sandpaper. I have some diamondwood strikers that need that from time to time.
