HEVI 13- 7 shot penetration test VS Hevi 13- 6 shot AT 40 yards

So there has been several questions on how the hevi 13, 7 shot performs as far has penetration. I set up a piece of 14ga metal that would be used on a pole barn or whatever. I shot at 40yards with my 870 super mag. Load Hevi 13, 7 shot, 3.5in, 2 1/8 or 2 1/4 oz.  There were a lot of 7's laying on the ground. The 6 shot was devastating. Hope this helps.

Several years ago when the Hevi 7 was the latest and greatest I was patterning my guns with it. I also noticed many of the pellets would stick in the heavy cardboard I was shooting at. I was not real impressed. The shells threw great numbers on paper, and we did kill a few gobblers with them. But after seeing the cardboard results we switched to Federal Heviweights.

Well if turkeys ever become proficient at making 14ga body armor I know what will still kill them.

I shoot 7's and they flat HAMMER birds.  Jelly's the head and neck area EVERY time.  BAD MEDICINE!!!  As stated, when the turkeys start wearing 14 gauge tin, I'll switch.

I did not shoot at tin, just cardboard. That is why I moved on from them. And we also killed birds with the hevi #7.

I think your little test was quite revealing.  I have no idea how the penetration of that tin relates to the tissue of a turkey, but I would guess that it would be similar to penetrating the spinal column of a turkey???


Anyone who has ever broken open a Hevi-shot load knows that the shot is not uniform in size or shape.  The #7's will have  slightly smaller average size than the #6's, and I would guess that the holes in the tin correlate to larger pellets while the dents correlate to smaller sized pellets (in both tests).

As I remember originally Hevi-13 referred to the density of the pellets (i.e. lead being 11 gms/cc, original Hevi-shot at 12 gms/cc and Hevi13 being 13 gms/cc).  I swear I remember marketing touting the increased density at some point, but currently Hevi-13 is the same density as the orginal Hevi-shot at 12 gms/cc...  I believe the only difference currently is that that Hevi-13 has a higher payload, but the shot is actually the same...  Someone please correct me if I am incorrect, and please post a link...
