Im not a jake killer, shot just a few in my life, but today I had to drop the hammer. You see, I killed my first gobbler on my birthday with my dad 19 years ago today. I have never called in a bird or shot another bird with him since. He has some ex military related health issues and doesnt get in the woods much anymore. In fact just getting him there is the first challenge. He has a condition where he looses his balance, so if he makes it to the woods, walking is the second issues. Well last year I got him in the woods and called one in but couldnt get the shot. Today the woods were quite, but as I was drifting I got a gobble pretty close. We slipped to the bank and went in about 30 yards. I set out the DSD and started doing my thing. In about two minutes I saw gobblers slipping. I told Dad to get ready. They came in on a string. I saw that they were jakes, but I didnt care, wanted to be there to watch my dad shoot one , who knows could be his last spring. Well he popped his and the other two scattered. I had ol Ugly Betty( my old retired turkey slayer Beretta 390) and one was still at about 45 yards, so I dropped the hammer too. I couldnt let a double with my Dad slip away, jake or not.
