Amen on the 300 straight 6.  Had one in my first truck and it was a beast.  If it needed worked on, me and 3 other full size guys could get under the hood and do whatever was needed, no computers - just hand tools.  I bought a new truck and gave that one to my younger brother.  It finally threw a rod through the block around 200,000 miles.  He had to shut the engine off after it threw the rod - she just wouldn't quit!
