Not a single peep!!!  To say I'm shocked with our hunting is an understatement.   I'm blown away.    :angry9:

Hang in their Dan, at least your able to hunt everyday. I won't be able to go again until next Sunday morning and that depends on the weather. You ain't trespassing unless you get caught. J/K. Anyways, have fun and enjoy being out there playing the chess game with The Master Himself.  :icon_thumright: :anim_25: :wav:

I had a good hunt this morning.   I got to where I wanted to listen and started owling my butt off and must have had 5-6 owls going nuts.   No gobbles!!!  I finally said the hell with this and I broke out my crow call and went nuts on it.  My crow call is really obnoxious. lol   On about my third series I thought I heard a faint gobble.  I let things settle down and hit it hard again and this time I heard a distinct gobble.  All right!!  I hauled butt to where I thought I needed to be and stood by the tree and hit the call one more time just to be sure.   He gobbled again.   I sat down and got set up and popped a mouthcall in.   I didn't realize it at first but he was on the ground the first time he gobbled and by the time I got ready he had already moved off to about 150 yds. from where I was.   I yelped to him and he didn't answer so I went nuts with some aggressive yelping and fast clucking.  This time he answered me and lo and behold he was closer.  I can't tell you how good it felt to finally having a turkey responding the way their supposed to.   I did a little ground cackle with a couple of quick yelps behind it and he double gobbled-closer.   I was set up perfect on top of a little hill with a woods road running toward him to my rt. about 15 yds.   I had a feeling he was going to come rt. up the rd. and he did.    When he got to about 50 yds. I yelped twice and he gobbled again.   I cocked my gun and started aiming down the rd.   I first saw his head at about 40 yds through some brush that lined the side of the rd.  I started tracking him with my sights.  The sides of the rd. at that pt. are about 2-3' above the roadbed so every once in a while his head would pop up and then disappear but I had a perfect shot at it when he got to about 25 yds.   I got the gun aimed at that section of the rd. and waited for him to step into plain view which he did.   OMG!!!!  A frigging Jake!!!   I couldn't believe it.   He stood still with his head sticking up looking for me for about 30 seconds.   I was "extremely tempted" and at one pt. I had pressure on the trigger.   My trigger pull is only 2 lbs. and I swear I was at 1 lb. at one pt.!!    I didn't do it.  He moved forward another 3-4 steps and just to be sure he was the one doing all the gobbling I cutt at him hard and he double gobbled rt. in front of me..    This wasn't a super Jake either.   He was a skinny little bastard with a 2" beard!! lol   I just let him walk off and uncocked my gun.    That was the only action I had this morning but it sure felt good.    Finally a gobbling bird that was responsive.   I'll be guiding the next 5 days or so so if I'm going to shoot a bird it'll have to be a double but that's ok.   I just like working the dang things.

sounds like a great morning. You will call birds in every time now that you will be guiding. :icon_thumright:

I took the boys out yesterday evening with no luck. Did see three birds, hens I think, one of them may have been a tom or jake. We was trying to get into position on what I thought was the tom but I didn't explain myself good enough to the boy. There is a low spot runnin down throught the field and I had told him to stay low and we could use that to cross the field to where we needed to be. I said keep up and stay next to me.  :icon_thumright: Here we go, I get to where the bird can't see me, I have some pines between me and the bird, so I stand up and stretch and look for Isaiah but he got about 30 feet behind me. Anyway when he saw me stand up, he stood up as well. The bird could still see him from his position when he stood up.  :'(  I am almost for sure that is what spooked the bird off. Well we eased on over to where the bird should be but he is gone. I have to take all the credit for screwing that up because I didn't explain to him what we were going to do and WHY we were doing it that way. Anyway, lesson learned by me. Had a great time being out there with him, really enjoyed it. Maybe next time. That makes the sixth hunt of the season and I can't hardly stand it. I can't wait for Sunday morning to get here so I can get back out there. :z-guntootsmiley:

I went out Friday mornin but wasn't able to fill my last tag. On the bright side of things, I did manage to find a couple more birds. One of them, I am almost 100% sure is a jake by the way he gobbles but the other one is a dandy. He can really come on with it. Best Gobble I have heard all year. I may have to ease back in there in the morning and see what happens. Just hope he ain't on the other side of the little creek. With all the rain we had last night, crossing it would be a real night mare. Just have to wait and see how things go. :z-guntootsmiley:
