Missouri 2017

Thought I would share my missouri season so far. I've heard lots of poor hunting and gobbling reports but I have  actually had a great season. I probably have better access to land than most but  sometimes that just dosent matter and turkeys don't act like turkeys. The first week I killed a nice three year old that gobbled with 5 to 6 other birds within 100 yards or so of each other. All week birds gobbled great and wanted to hear hen noises. This was my son's first real turkey season and we have had some great hunts and he missed a BIG bird the first week but is crazy about this turkey thing. I have a very good friend who I took hunting for the first time when he was 55yrs young, he loves turkeys as much as anyone I know now and I enjoy every minute we spend hunting together. He has killed some great birds with me the past 5 years. I started a new job last year and didn't get to take him at all and he didn't kill a bird so I wanted to make sure he had a good spring this year. During Christmas his grandson accidently detached his retina in his right eye and after spending alot of time shooting we realized his only option would be shooting left handed. It was a struggle to make a long story short but he killed a great bird with 2 beards and had an awesome hunt. This past weekend we in southern missouri were dealt rain, historical, tragic rain. 16+inches where I live. For those of you that may not know, southern missouri has been absolutely devestated  by flooding and it has put turkeys on the backburner. This part of the country could use some prayers for sure, and in the back of my mind I wonder about our turkey eggs and I hope the hens try again. I had plenty of gobbling birds every morning I hunted untill the rain started and then didn't hear or see a turkey for 3days and decided to go back to work. I am going to try and get my son on one again this weekend and hope to see some gobblers with hens to give me some hope for this year's hatch.

Sorry about the flooding man.  I can't help there besides throwing a couple prayers up your way.  However, I can offer you a little light at the end of your tunnel about your turkeys.

Life will find a way. 

Last year at my buddies place that I get to occasionally hunt had up to 4 feet or more of flooding in certain locations.  My buddy feared the worst but as the year progressed and he checked the cameras and drove around, he noticed poults everywhere.  Albeit a little behind schedule compared to past years.  As long as you have breeding season left, I believe they will make new nests and lay more eggs.  In fact he says he has more turkeys on his place this year than ever.   this is just my town, there are surrounding communities in much, much worse shape than our area. The Big Piney rose 36ft above normal pool. It has been truly devestating, 4 million just in estimated bridge repairs in Texas county, and our county faired better than some around us
