Went and hunted some pretty famous public land in western OK. I'm from Southeastern Oklahoma and our season isn't in yet, so this was a great way to increase my season by a week and 2 turkey. Black Kettle and Packsaddle are beautiful areas and these were also my first Rios. I'll be making it a yearly trip I'm sure!

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

Nice! I've always found Black Kettle a challenging hunt.  Way to get it done.

That is great! Congrats on your bird! Looks like me and my friends will be headed to the Black Kettle now that we know there are so many birds on it.

Have hunted Black Kettle....  not that impressed....  Yes they have birds.... lots of them... but they are sooo heavily hunted on the public land that they get call shy real fast.  If going that direction, after the first week of the season, go to an outfitter.....  the birds congregate on the private land real fast.

Congratulations!  Went out there for the second through fourth day of the season.  All I have to say is wow.  You do not want to go there then.  Both places were chaotic and filled with campers.  Even saw what one could only describe as shoot and corral as my brother and I witnessed some people moving it in reverse in a truck, stop, get out with gun in hand, and two of the passengers commence in shooting while another drove the truck to the other side of the property to "corral".  Had set up in a spot where we saw turkeys only to have somebody park alongside the roadway in between us and then after we told them we were hunting there, leave the truck parked there, and walk past to hunt a short distance from us.  Wish I could have been there a couple days sooner to scout and hunt the opener but I wasn't thinking about going there when I got the wife baseball tickets for her Christmas gift and then the rain was postponed until the next day so I was a little delayed.  Seemed like everything around there is leased that is not public.  This was the first failed turkey trip I had been on, so I was a little heartbroken leaving the state empty handed.  If the stars align right, I may have a day or two where I'm able to make a short return before the end of the season to attempt to get a Rio.  Definitely different country than I'm use to though.  I just refuse to pay an outfitter.  I heard the turkey population hasn't faired well due to the drought so if it doesn't work out this season, I may wait a couple years and try it again.
