I remember reading an article a LONG time ago where some dudes experimented with taking parts off of a gobbler decoy to see how far it could be stripped down before toms stopped responding to it.  Basically, as long as a blue, red, and white head looking thing was in place, turkeys would attack it.  The final version that worked was a sock painted like a gobbler's head placed on a broomstick handle.  I searched online several times and can't find any reference to the article, but it was in an old hunting magazine...Petersen's, maybe?  Anyhow, that article definitely sheds light on how well "the funky" seems to work.

Earlier in the week, I sat up on a flock of turkeys that flew down to the grass field and landed about 75 yards from where I had a Funky Chicken right behind a hen in the breeding position. I also had a feeder hen out front about 5 yards. One of the subordinate toms broke from the flock and immediately flogged the Funky Chicken. He must have been the runt of the clutch because he couldn't have weighted 15# soaking wet, so I decided not to shoot him but wait on one of the dominate ones. The problem was that the Funky Chicken was now face down in the grass and the other turkeys would not come over. If I could mount the Funky Chicken on a "springy thingy" of some sort, I think this problem could be avoided, thus giving me an up-right Funky Chicken regardless of the a** whuppen he takes. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I've already been to the local hardware store and found a stout spring which I'm adjusting to fit between the ground stake and the decoy so that it will flop back to an upright position when flogged by a real turkey. This should make for some interesting antics from the real bird!

Ooh they are going to have fun with that!

I like my quarter strut decoy, I've had great success over the years using it.

This guy strutted and gobbled for two hundred yards on his way to the DSD this morning. Fight ensued at 6 steps.
