I'm wondering if it would sound better at a distance, as in the distance back to the truck where I'll probably leave it

Louder and at a distance it probably would sound better and might even fool a turkey.   But I still don't think I'd try it unless it was a last ditch effort.   It does sound like something that has some potential if someone had the patience to work on it.

sounds like a chicken on meth, but it also sounds like some sort of gobble. I have yet to hear a gobble call that sounds anywhere near good as an Eastern wild turkey.
