The heck with calls

Everyone has their own styles of hunting and I certainly won't condemn a man for the way he chooses to fill his tag, as long as its done morally and legally. My way is to strike up that old tom with a call and outwit him at his own game, and in the end have him gobbling, spitting and drumming mere yards away. Pulling the trigger is nearly an afterthought. There is no greater adrenaline rush I am aware of that exists. And that adrenaline high is what keeps me rolling out of bed before daylight as many mornings as I am able. Enjoy your time off, and good luck with your hunting, no matter which way you choose to do it.  :icon_thumright:

Pinnacle of woodsmanship? We got guys around here that get thier limits every year by simply going to green fields and sitting in a blind.  Several of these guys don't even own a call. I have no problem with this, but for me it's all about the calling. If you are talking about slipping within 40 yds of a grown gobbler, then that is indeed some serious woodsmanship.

I think calling them in an hearing them gobble is the most fun , then you put the hammer to them... :icon_thumright:

Its all about the challenge of calling in the bird for me....to hear him gobbler back and watch and hear him come in.  I have killed birds that never made a sound like others have.  But if the calling part was taken away I probably would just start hunting for a butterball at the locael grocery store. Thats just me though.

I shot a nice tom last fall after patterning him daily like a deer. Seven longbeards would show up nearly everyday in this remote field/gravel pit between 11-3. On the last day of our 5 day fall season I took one. It was OK but NOTHING like calling in and tricking a big spring bird gobbling his fool head off all the way. This fall bird was ho-hum, a big, sneaky gobbling tom leaves me breathless. If you think fall birds are the pinnacle you need to shoot more spring birds. To each their own but I doubt you'll get much support here.

Oh yeah, I do agree on the Primos Power Crystal however, even after spending hundreds on customs, a $20 production isn't supposed to sound that good. 30-40 gobblers have marched to their death because of it.

I love to call that gobbler and listen to him gobble, and when he answers and comes in strutting and putting on a show, there is nothing in the world like it.  Its the thrill of knowing you tricked that gobbler into coming to you, instead of you going to him.

I ambush in the fall, and ambush and call in the spring. If he wont commit to my calling in the spring the ambush is on.

That's what I was talking about, Ole Raspy. Do what it takes. One way or the other.
