Optimum Mounting Location for Red Dot Sight

Let's assume we're not constrained by manufacturers' pre-drilled scope mount locations or lack thereof and can mount a red dot sight on our shotgun wherever we wish.  Not realistic, I know.

Given the infinite eye relief of a red dot, where would you mount yours and why?

My limited experience has been to place the sight as far from my eye as practical.  Allows me to more readily leave both eyes open and the housing obscures less of the target.  Hence, I have better downrange vision and retain peripheral vision from my right eye (as a right-handed shooter).

However, I see more mounts closer to the shooter's face than I do in mid to distal mounts like mine.  What am I missing out on???

I moved mine all over my receiver (Benelli Nova) and couldn't really see any difference.  Being I was drilling and tapping it myself, I was not tied down to one spot.  Being honest, I went midway on my receiver just because It looked good.    Not very scientific.   Lol

When I was deciding where to drill and tap for the 336 mount on my 870 20 ga, it slid it as far back as I could and still have full contact between the top of the receiver and the mount. The rail then gave me plenty of options for anchoring the sight. I placed the sight about midway on the receiver which turns out to be about 10" from the sighting glass to my eye.
