Youth gun advice please....

If you had to choose between the Youth Rem 870 and the Youth Mossberg Bantam guns, what would be your choice and WHY?

Thanks for any good sound advise. Trying to pick a gun for my son this Christmas.

Quality, performance, and feel to me all go toward the 870 but with todays loads and choke combos available
Either will get the job done.

That's the kind of the mindset that I have on this. I hunt with a 835 and absolutely love it. I know there are better quality guns out there, but I'm hung up on it. As for the 20ga guns, I'm in the dark on this one. Thanks for the tip.

Never used the Moss, but my son's youth 870 that he used for duck hunting was quickly outgrown.  My daughter uses it now (she is grown) for a turkey gun.  Nice patterns and will easily kill at 40 yards.  I have even shot skeet with it once, just for fun.  Worked fine. 

I would say with those two choices, ask which fits better.

My son has had great luck hunting turkeys since he was 10 using the Moss 500. He's 13 now and the gun is too small. We have swapped out chokes and he shoots skeet, clays, and upland game birds with the gun. We have had no problems with it and like it enough to be restocking it  for a better fit. There might be better guns out there but after a few thousand rounds the 500 still works great.

Thanks for the replies guys. I went with the 870. Remington also had a rebate, so I couldn't refuse.

I believe that your son would be well outfitted and quite happy with either gun.

A few years ago I ran into a performance problem with my new 20 gauge 870 and had to do some research and thorough cleaning to get it to work properly.  Check out the information in this post from a few years back. I have had no problems with this gun since this remedy.

Ive tinkered with 4 little 20 pops the past 4 years. 1 was a mossy 500 youth, the other a h&r pardner pump, and 2 870's.  My favorite and which the one I carried last year was the 870 youth with slip on recoil pad, Williams sights, and a Carlson 575 with fed hw7s. 

With that being said, every one of those 4 mentioned were more than capable of the 40 yard mark, and the best shooter out of that bunch was the heavy, ugly, china made h&r.    You Got what ya liked so now play with chokes and you'll have a sweet little thumper.

my ex loved her youth 870 that i built for her, she ended up taken 5 birds with it once i had it drilld and

tapped for a scope, it and or her with it was a deadly combo good luck in your decision, russ

From what I have seen and read between Remingtons and Mossbergs, I would tend to agree with the last couple of posters regarding the Mossberg.  Mossberg has recently taken noticeable steps ahead of Remington in adding the features that make a difference.  Can't for the life of me understand why Remington doesn't tap and drill their youth shotguns, when the trend has been so great in recent years for optics on turkey guns.  Most customers had rather have it and not need it, versus need it and not have it.  Also in recent years, Remington has had huge issues with finishes on some of their guns whereby hunters report they can't keep the rust off them regardless of how well and often they clean. Also what kid doesn't want camo on their gun (most adults want this too!) At the rate Mossberg is listening and reacting to hunters versus the stagnation of Remington, 10 years from now on this site you'll likely be reading 1 positive Remington Comment for every 2 or 3 positive Mossberg comments.   Get em a Mossberg and he'll be thrilled.

I chose the Mossberg 510 in 20 gauge for my girls.... they have shared it for 4 years..... very light and easy to carry..... it's a little louder with more recoil, but a very accurate shooter.....
