Total shoulder replacement

Just wondering if anyone has had a total shoulder replacement  When were you able to shoot heavy turkey loads.  Any pointers would be appreciated.

I am going to have a total right shoulder replaced the second  week of Jan.  I am hoping to be able to hunt March 15 in Ms.

The shotgun that I plan to hunt with is Browning Gold 3 in with Winchester Longbeards #5. Any input would be appreciated.

I don't have any first-hand experience with that type of surgery or know the "normal" recovery period from it. I would encourage you to seek the advice and counsel of your surgeon and of the rehab folks that you'll undoubtedly work with after the surgery. I know that it's important to allow time for healing as well as working to regain or to keep mobility in the joint.

I don't know much about the surgery, but shoulders usually heal slow.  You may need a 20 gauge, learn to shoot left handed and still need a shooting stick of some kind.

9 wks rehab...I don't see that happening. I had a partially torn rotator cuff (arthroscopic repair) and they wouldn't let me do anything till 12 wks.

I'm with Gamblinman on this. I also had a partially torn rotator cuff surgery. I was off work for 3 months and went back to work on light duty for another month before the Dr. released me for regular duty. I tried to shoot my wife's bow(set 35lbs.) at the 3 month mark. I could do it, but it still hurt some. I shot 2 arrows and quit. It hurt worse later that day than it did when I shot her bow.

If you are dead set on going, Tail Feathers idea is probably your answer.

Thanks for the advice guys. I am going to get more info pre op next Tuesday. I am going to be motivated  with rehab. If it means shooting off left shoulder:thats what it will be. When I asked the doctor on my first visit...he said it might hurt a BIT !!  I'm looking forward to having this surgery .  The pain has got unbearable. Its gotta be  better.  Lord willing....creek dont rise I will be in the woods listening for that first gobble.

Good luck with the surgery. Sure you will find a way to make it work. Shooting left handed is very doable. My uncle was in a halo with a broken neck and still managed to deer  hunt with a .223.  Was hilarious to watch him walk through the woods tho. He had a great sense of humor about it  and did get a couple deer.

Never had shoulder surgery myself but I know people who have.  Best advice I can give would be to prepare to possibly not hunt for the upcoming season or learn to shoot lefty.

I'm sorry to say that 8 weeks post op shooting turkey loads is probably overly ambitious. Left handed shooting is more of a possibility using the sticks is a good idea too. Is it a reverse shoulder?  Those are more stable....depending on your ortho it may be 6-8 weeks before you are allowed to actively move it. Might be a good year to volunteer to help a youth or disabled hunter bag a gobbler... 12 yrs experience as a PT....best of luck!

Old timer I admire your determination. My shoulder hurts just thinking about shooting a 12 gauge with turkey loads after going through that. Lol.. I would use a 20 gauge auto,maybe limbsaver pad,and a lighter load shell and call em in close or like others said maybe shoot lefty or go with someone else just to be able to hear em gobble. I think I get as much enjoyment calling them in for others as I do for myself other than the piece and tranquility of hunting alone. Goodluck to you and keep us updated. Good luck with the shoulder. That is one of the toughest surgeries to go thru and rehab. I had the rotator surgery and it took a year before all pain was gone. Glad that one is behind me.

I took around a fifth of my turkeys from the off shoulder until my cardiologist forbid me from shooting from the left when I got my pacemaker.  The use of a reflex sight will inssure accuracy and allow you to shoot with both eyes open.

   Well I'm planning on hunting off left shoulder for starters. I am fixing up 2 old tripods with v yokes. Where there is a will..their is way.
   Back in  May 1993  I had my right hip replaced. In Jan 1994  I had a total left hip replaced.  March 20 Opening day in Ms I was hunting with a walking stick.  Since that time turkeys have hated for me to be in the woods. I ve given up on deer hunting but I hunt turkey with a passion.
   Each surgery is different.  I'm going to strive to be ready .  That's all I can do.
