NJ youth opener, yesterday. We got in early n set some dekes in an area the birds have been in. Couldn't get em to gobble Fri night but against my judgement I went there.
Rained pretty good but I did get 2 gobblers started our way, once they were close deer came in, smelled the dekes n blew up. Killed that deal.
Second stop has a bird gobbling for the world to hear, two yelps he woulda rode home w us. My older daughter walked the farm lane n spooked bird, ugh.
Next birds I struck on a ridge, they came in but we couldn't see em. I backed off calling to move the birds w me. As the birds were almost in range, I saw older daughter raise her gun the younger one started trying to kill some bug with the flailing motion girls do n that was that. Both girls saw the birds n the younger one shoulda waited a few more seconds.
This morning, only younger daughter eligible age wise for NY. We crept in early, much as I hate to say, last night I didnt get there to roost. Up the hill we went, I started seeing birds in trees. Set the dekes, backed off set blind.
Daylight came n at least 3 mature birds, maybe one Jake start hammering.
Few tree yelps on a trough, maybe 2 clucks once my daughter pointed down saying they were out of trees, which they weren't cause a second later a longbeard flies into set at 20 yards. She missed em.
All said was a cool weekend
