Took son on His first Turkey Hunt.
We were able to get together for a hunt up on some local BLM land. We pulled into the location before daybreak and set out our decoys. Heard gobbling as day broke to both the south and north of us. Had quite a chat with this Tom that was to the south but he didnt want to leave the hens he was with. The Toms to the north moved farther north and onto private property. I told my son that we should just stay put until the hens went to their nest and the gobbles would start again, hopefully. It was time to just relax, drink some coffee and enjoy the warming morning. At about 9:30 we heard a gobble to the south, I responded with some yelping, he answered. I told my son to get ready because this bird was interested. The way we were set was on a small flat on the side of a steep narrow valley with a creek running through. My calls were reflecting off the other side and caused the Bird to be on the wrong side of the creek. We could see him walking along and looking for the hen, so as soon as he had a clear view of our decoys I called again. It worked, he jumped across the creek and started working toward the decoys. This bird put on the classic show for my son, spitting, drumming and full strut. Once he got to the decoys I gave a little call and he raised his head. Thats all it took. My son is now addicted.
