I found a Star Dot for 835. This will be my first year turkey hunting. Thinking I can get it for $40.00. Should I buy it or go with something else? What loads would y'all recommend for Star Dot?
Thanks for any help.

For the money the old orginals weren't bad. I don't know about the new ones so I can't comment on those. Mine shoots around 180 in the 10 at 40 yards and that's with Temps in the 50's.  I shoot hevi shot #6's in the 3.5 shell. For lead it liked the federals best. Didn't have much luck with winchester or remington loads.  I have never tried Longbeards through it but have heard reports it's pretty impressive. Good luck.

Buy it. If you pass on it, please post a link to where it is and someone here will scoop up on it.

Jump on it. I've got 2 one, one for each gun 835 and a 935. Both do over 200 in the 10 with LB 6s, one is an original, the other looks just like it but the porting is in different spots.

One says Star dot / Preston Pittman 45.00 and the other is in Box for 65.00

Both are on eBay. I ordered choke from colonial arms .676 constriction yesterday. Guess I'll stick with it and see how it does. If I'd seen these yesterday I would've bought one of them. Like I said its my first year so I still have things to buy. Hope I don't regret it.
Thank you all for your help.

I have a star dot in my 935. While it shoots good with longbeard 4s, it has been dismal with longbeard 5s, Black HV 5s and Federal HW 7s.So far it hasn't really lived up to its reputation, at least in my gun.I'm gonna try it with some magblrends and would love to try some hevishot straight 6s or 7s if I could ever find them locally.

I'm sure it won't matter as far as patterns go, but the PTC technology star dots like the one u have pictures aren't the originals.    I've found lately that those ones aren't THAT hard to find.

From what I've read on some of the older post and browsing through this forum, pushed me away from the 2 on eBay. I've seen a few on there go as high as 86.00. These 2 weren't getting any action. I'm going to try the colonial I ordered and my friend has a jelly head to let me try. Thanks for all the help. It's good people like y'all who have put in the time and gracious enough with your knowledge that will save ROOKIES like myself a lot of money. I've got a lot to learn about  turkey as far as calling, setting up and lord knows everything else that comes with turkey hunting. I really appreciate all your help. Maybe one day I can pass on some knowledge to someone that will help them. Good luck to you all.

Thanks again
Allen

Thanks for posting, I picked up the $65 one.
I have the Highland Sports version and it throws up 250 hits with 3.5in 2.25oz #7 hevi 13 all day long.  Guess we will see how this one does, worse case I have an extra.  I would THINK the difference would be pretty negligible between the two.

Not sounding negative but I'm surprised that setup doesn't get you more than 250 hits?

No worries, I wouldn't be impressed if all I could squeeze out was 250.  I said 250 all day long because that's the least I have seen.  Generally its in the 280-310 range.

Same seller ended up listing another stardot, but this one was knurled on the end and said highland sports. Ended up getting that one too. Both arrived this weekend. The knurled one had no writing on it, 10 ports, and highland sports on the packaging. I will be holding onto that one and giving my brother the other for his new 835.
