Going on the slam this year. How do you go about getting your birds back home for taxidermy? Is there any regulations about transporting across state lines? Or how do I get them back from somewhere when I am flying? Any suggestions?

Find a local taxidermist in the area you're hunting. He can cape the bird and ship it to your taxidermist back home. This past spring I killed a couple Rio's in OK and had it shipped to my guy in PA. I've done it a couple times now with no issues.
I like my turkey well peppered

Caping birds is simple and it makes dealing with transportation issues much, much easier.  Just take the time to learn how to cape your own birds and all your future transportation/shipping issues will be solved.  I know of at least one video on You-Tube that shows how to do it, and I have posted written directions on caping in the taxidermy section here, as well.

If you have a taxidermist selected, talk to him or her about how they want it caped if you are going that route.  Not all taxidermist cape turkeys the same way.  Also, make sure you do your homework on taxidermists.  Some of the work I see posted online is clear that guys dont do their homework on who does exceptional work.

Most importantly is to take care of the bird.   Carry some paper towels and stuff them down the birds throat right after its shot   Take a small plastic bag and bag the head also.  Use a rubber band around he base of it head.  But don't do it on the feathers.  Just the fleshy part of the head.   Treat it like a baby lol. Don't throw it in back of truck and drag it all over the bed of truck. Or ground for that much. When shoot try and get it off ground quickly.  Don't just let it sit and flop.   If it does lose bunch feathers  pick them up and place them in plastic by also.  They can be used again as well lol  try and wipe off blood as much as you can also.   Think that bout got it covered lol.  Idk who you are looking into doing your bird. But be advised. If you send your bird to some these guys with the big names and cost big bucks. They may not be the one that does your bird and it may not turn out looking like the birds they have in contest and have awards for.  That seems to be a common thing these days.  I've seen several birds that look like crap. That supposedly come from these award winners and basically what happened is somebody that works for them did the bird.
