Got a new 835 ????????
March 01, 2016, 03:14:55 PM
Ok so I broke down and shelled out the money and bought a new 835. Took it out and ran a couple rounds of the new Winchester longboard XR thru it and was completely surprised how high it shot. At 35yds I only grazed the top of the target using a 6 o'clock hold. The worst part is I can't lower the sight anymore. Any recommendations on a new sight? Are the truglo magnum clamp on sights at Walmart any count? Or should I just pop off the rear sight and just use the front sight like a normal bead on a shotgun?

I never had any luck with sights that hook on the rib. They all make me raise my head of the stock a bit to line em up and when you raise your head, you shoot high. Every gun I ever had that came with them got the rear sight removed and I used the front sight as a bead

I've used the Truglo's for years with no problems, you could try with the bead, but you will be better served with an adjustable type sight. The more you fool with shotguns the less you will trust them.

JMO....
I would get some 2-3/4 low brass and shoot with them. Try moving the rear site up or back on the rib. Get it where it needs to be before shooting the big boys. Also, try some of the win HV loads when you get it on. Ya might like them. They pattern real nice.

When I had an 835 I put the Tru Glo MagnumGobble Stopper sights on it and loved them.
I have them on three guns now including a Mossberg 20 gauge that shot high.

I put a Bushnell 1 x 28 mm red dot on mine. Came out of the box perfectly zeroed in for my 835. I used a laser bore sight to verify. For what it's worth I had the same exact problem with my sight. The laser bore sight showed high and I couldn't adjust my rear sight low enough. With the red dot.. I'm good

First, make sure your barrel is TIGHT. Make sure the retention nut is screwed as hand tight as possible, then with the gun obviously unloaded, place the butt on firm ground and put your weight on the barrel, while turning the nut as tight as possible again. Then, make sure your sights are as far apart as possible, bringing the rear sight back (if possible) to just before the rib begins to taper toward the receiver.

My two current 3.5" guns shot really high out of the box. One is an 835 and the other is an SX3. I put a Nikon Turkey Pro scope on the 835 and a Burris Fastfire 3 on the SX3. No more issues.

My 500 shot WAY high with the factory sights no matter what shells I put through it. I just couldn't get the rear sight low enough. Must be a universal Mossberg thing. Now I have a red dot on it with a beartooth comb raising kit. Not what I necessarily wanted to do when I got the gun, but it's a setup that works so I'm happy with it.

My 835 and 935 shoot high. The truglo magnum gobble dot sights have a high front sight, which encourages your shot to go lower, plus you can adjust the rear. I had to nearly bottom out the rear sight on my 935 to make it shoot where I aimed.

I stopped by my local Dicks Sporting Goods and picked up a set of the Truglo Magnum Gobble Dot Xtreme sights for $16.00 and put them on today and they seem to be a HUGE improvement over the factory sights. I called Mossberg to tell them about the problem and they are going to be sending me another set to replace the factory sights. I guess i will save them in case something ever happens to the truglo sights I purchased. And the tech I spoke with at Mossberg said that this is a problem they run into very often. You would think that they would do something about it, but o well.

I am a fan of a dot scope myself. They are nice for awkward shots or shooting left handed. Have nothing against scopes, I just worry about the repercussions I am faced with if an awkward shot presents itself and my eye is a little to close.
