Best Choke for SuperX2 with Longbeard XR?

I'm shooting a Winchester super X2 with the Carlson Longbeard XR choke. The 3.5 #5's will not produce a consistent POI at 20 yards or less. I'm assuming it's just too tight as it is very inconsistent. I have to move my sight way to the left as well as they shoot way to the right. The same shell in #6's shoot decent (but still way to the right) but I'm wondering if there is another choke I should try with the #5's as I like the idea of the larger shot.

Any thoughts here?

I'm really interested in what's going on with your POI. When you say it's not consistent at 20 yards, do you mean the core pattern is "moving" around?

It is a very tight pattern with the #5's and yes it moves a few inches up and down and side to side from shot to shot. I guess only a couple inches isn't too bad if the pattern was bigger but it is so tight at this range that it could be a miss.  It almost looks like a slug hole at the center at 20 yards.

I suspect that the resin is not fracturing upon upset and that's what is causing the inconsistency in the POI. As you know, the "slug" is supposed to fracture and the resin become buffer as the shot travels down the bore. If that does not happen, or if it does not fracture completely, you may have clumps of shot/resin that enter the choke and exit the muzzle. That can cause the POI to wander as you've described.

Normally, the larger shot like the #4 and #5 are less prone to this than the #6 shot. I found that the 3" shells with 1 7/8 oz of shot are less prone to that than the 3" 1 3/4 oz shells, regardless of shot size.

Are you seeing any clumps of shot? That's a pretty good indication of the problem.

I have shot the 3.5" shells in all sizes/versions but frankly not enough to see if that holds true for them.

I'd recommend that you find some of the 3" shells with 1 7/8 oz of shot and see how they pattern for you.

I don't think it's a choke problem.

I've got a pure gold in mine. Can't recall the constriction at the moment but it works just fine for me.
