Problems with new rifle (need advice)

I recently bought my wife a Savage Axis 7mm-08.  I also got her a box of Rem Core-Lokt ammo.  When we took it to the range to sight in the other day we encountered a problem.  The shells racked fine and all, but when they called the line cold we had to eject a live round.  The round was jammed in the chamber.  The range master was able to get it open and the round out.  When it went hot again we were shooting and the spent shells were ejecting.  We went to eject another live round.  again the live round was jammed.  I got it out this time by fireing and the spent ejected just fine.  What could be the issue.  Do you think it is just the box of ammo or the gun?  When I got home I thouroghly cleaned the breach and chamber.  I took out the bolt and inserted a live shell (all while being safe) it would not slip all the way into the chamber.  I re inserted the bolt and pushed it into the chamber, but didnt close the bolt.  Again I had to physically remove the shell, this time I ran a rod down the barrel (bolt out of gun the whole time) and push the shell back out.  Any advice would be appreciated.

PS I am taking it back where we bought it to see about having it serviced.

Sounds like the rifle may have been bored a bit short,or barrel turned in a tad too far. Yeah I know thats sounds crazy. Or it could very well be the shells.Im going to assume that you have the correct ammo. My wifes Savage in 7 08 has never had a problem.

If the new brass is within spec, the chamber is out of whack.  Take it back where you bought it and tell them you want a different gun.

After a bit more thought, could you mic the cartridge overall length.Mic the casing as well,of an unfired round. Case length should be 2.035 and the overall length approx.2.800. Of course this will vary a bit with the type of bullet. Also after extracting an unfired round do you see marks on the bullet where it jammed into the rifling ?

I agree with redarrow, it sounds like the head spacing is tight. If the core lokt ammo is a round nose, the projectile is engaging the rifling. With a ballistic tip, they might not contact.  I find it hard to believe the barrel would not be bored deep enough and find it hard to believe the shells would be spaced to tall.  Thats really odd. However, a really close head space starts the projective into the barrel with better symetry (if that is the right word).

Well, it is the correct ammo.  And Spent shells eject with no problems.  It does not take alot of force to make the live shells go in, but they dont want to come back out.  I would say it gets tight 1/2 inch before the shell is all the way in.  I am taking it back to the gun store friday.  I am hoping it is the ammo.  If not she has only had the gun since the 16 of March.  We have only put 13 rounds through it.  I know the manufacturer will solve the problem.  I was just hoping it was the shells and we dont have to send the gun off.

My guess would be head space is out.  Check to see if you have rifling marks on the bullet ogive.  If you do then either head space is out or the bullets werent seated deep enough from the factory.  Does it take much pressure when the bolt cams over?  If the bullets are seated up into the lands that can also cause the load to develop a lot higher pressure thats why most people seat off the lands a tad.

If the shells check out the correct OAL, the headspace is to tight, sounds like someone forgot to use the go no go gauge to check the headspace.

sounds to me this is the problem.had this happen before with reloads a guy done for me.closed the bolt real hard, went to pull the shell out and the bullet stayed in the barrel.the ones i did get out had the rifleing marks on the bullet.did you try another shell from a different manufacture?

i would try different shells or take it back,., ,remington does have some issues on there shells.. just look at the core lok shells,, you can go and get a new box  and each bullet is seated in the shell different.. some bullets u can see the knurl on it and some are in farther and u can't see it.. this will make ur gun shoot different also.. don't buy remington much.. it might be ur gun also but savage shoots it before they sell it so i think they wouldve noticed this?
'anyway good luck on the new gun :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:
