Any thoughts/suggestions on the slot calls made with a thin strip of slate, copper, or aluminum in various trough designs? I see a few makers such as John Tanner, Fantomb Calls, Mike Lapp, Derby City Calls. Any noticeable sound or functional difference in comparison to basic pot call designs?

If they are made right they are pure turkey killers.  Of the names you mentioned Mike Lapp wins hands down,  no offense to the others who are also great.  I just really believe in his calls and know how they sound.  But these type calls are compact, versatile, and proven harvesters.  I say buy one from a few makers and decide yourself.  You won't be disappointed by the small collection you aqcuire! Let us know what you decide.

John Tanner makes a real good trough.

I own a Mike Lapp trough call and it is a great sounding call, I know first hand, the turkeys like for sure!
It will give you everything from hen sound to a deeper gobbler sound depending where you run it on the call.  Clucks and purrs well too!   All callmakers have a different ear for what they have as the model turkey in their mind, thus each tune their calls differently.  That goes with any type of call.
