Mouth call inconsistency (FLEXTONE GRIPE)

The top call is the call I used to bring in both my birds this year. I really like the way it sounds. Sharp and realistic sounding cuts. I can high front end yelp with it and keep the raspyness out as well.

The day  I shot my longbeard I thought I left the call in the woods. I found out this morning that I had actually put it back in my vest by my license. Anyway, I went and picked up 2 more of the same "Trash talker" call. I assumed they would all be the same cookie cutter type call.

I just grabbed the first 2 and took them home. They are so far different than the first, and from each other it is ridiculous. I made plans to hunt with my buddy yesterday so on the way home I picked up 2 more, in an act of desperation. This time I looked at each of the calls that were on the shelf.  Each one had a different cut/tension.

I picked 2 that looked as close to what the original looked like, as best I can remember.

I went ahead and tried them out. They were both pretty close to the original, but both different from each other.

I attached the picture at the top to see what I am talking about. The top call was the one that I love, and can run well.

IF you compare each of them you can see how off the cuts are, how different each one is.

Just wanted to let you guys to know to double check if buying a back up call. I am trying to reach out to Flextone now and get the issue resolved. Not sure if I can take them back to the place I purchased them or not. Almost think, that they would not take them since they are opened and have been used.

Not trying to start any brand issues, as I am sure many of the bigger name calls are the same. Might just have to go with call makers from now on.

The only mass produced call I can get any consistency out of is Woodhaven. Other than that, Hooks and Gooserbat are very consistent.

What is the best way to get in contact with a mouth call maker. How do I describe what call I am looking for. The one in the top is the best sounding call that I have used. Would I send a picture of that call, or see what they have similar?

Would I tell them what kind of sounds I am looking to get (raspy, easy to cut, able to have a high front end yelp)

new to purchasing custom calls.

I have heard from a couple of turkey hunting buddies that "you have to buy a few mouth calls to find one you like".  After seeing how the cuts are made by hand, I realize now why one call (same model) might be different from the next.  Truthfully I am surprised that even a small time maker can put out the consistency that they do.  However, I would have never have expected there to be that much difference between calls as you have shown here bowmike.  Wow. 


Just one more reason for me to send my money to a "custom" call maker as opposed to one of the big box stores and companies.

Throw the flextones away and buy you some Gooserbats, you will not regret buying them.  I have tried all  brands of diaphragms and the goosers are second to none.

The problem you have experienced is the norm with mouth calls.  It is the rare call that can be duplicated to end up sounding exactly like another one. 

You can, however, go through a process of altering the sound of any call you have to see if you can make it sound the way you want it to.  Just by taking a pair of sharp scissors and modifying the cuts on a call can make all the difference in the world as to how it sounds. 

Deepening the cuts, or cutting part or all of one of the tabs of the reeds off will many times improve a call.  Learn to go through a simple modification process with any mouth call you buy to "find the sound" hidden in that call.  Almost every call has it in there somewhere.

Highly recommend Natural Addiction Mouth Calls.  I tried some this year with great success.  Look up savduck (Del Crow) on here and he will get you set up.

reason I only buy calls from someone that I can call the actual maker of the call and talk to them, you wont get that with flextone.

There is a reason why they are different. Flextone has other callmakers make their calls for them. They do not make their own calls. Plus like was said earlier they are trying to sale volume and not consistency. I've had some other callmakers ask me to make their mouth calls for them. Thats not going to happen. Every call you get from me was made by me and as consistent as I can make them. Good luck buying them from the big callmakers.

I have used Joe Slaton's calls the past 2 or 3 years and I can verify that I have yet to find one that sounds much different than the others.  I know when I pop in a new one...it's gonna be on point.  I use woodhaven occasionally and have to modify the reeds to get them to sound like I want but they are probably the most durable mouth calls I've ever used.  I'm still using one going on 3 seasons.  I bought a few flextones on clearance the other day and did have to pic out the ones that looked similar.  I have not used them yet however.
