I'm newer to Turkey hunting and was wondering if anyone ever has tried hunting turkeys with a pistol.

For me personally, turkey hunting is about the method, not the result,....and the method I prefer is calling them in.  However, I suppose if someone gets their jollies by hunting them that way, who am I to judge.  It would certainly be more difficult to kill at gobbler with a pistol than with a shotgun, for sure. 

The one thing that did disturb me about the video is that he shot at birds in instances where there was no backdrop with a weapon that will carry quite some distance.  Shooting at those birds on the hilltops, not knowing what might be on the other side, was a basic no-no in gun safety.

I have always wanted to, but never have. I don't think that video reflects well on what most consider turkey hunting. I'd do it the same as I do with a shotgun, just aim at a different spot and use a revolver instead of a shotgun. I'm pretty sure it'd be a further challenge. Here in GA you can use a cap n ball revolver. I have a hard enough time with the shotgun, but I might get around to trying one of these days.

If you look around you'll find a video of Dick Kirby making a neck shot on a Rio with a .357. There's some other videos on there of folks using .410 Contenders.

I could enjoy calling one to twenty yards (without decoys) and taking him with a handgun, but it is not legal where I hunt.  It could definitely be fair chase if done fairly.

I never had much use for a handgun until several years ago when I got my CCW. Now I really enjoy shooting them and I think it would be awesome to get one within 20 yards and kill it with a handgun. Can't do it in Ohio though.

If legal I really have no issue with how anyone chooses to hunt, I do however have an issue with someone hunting with a weapon they are not proficient with, I dont know if the guy was just trying to make excuses or he is just a poor shot.

Maybe if he actually learned how to use a turkey call it may help him out as well, I think it would be pretty cool to kill one with a handgun, but not by jump shooting, stalking and getting into position for a kill shot takes some patience and skill, he seemed to just walk up on em and spray and pray!

The old Dick Kirby hunt I remember seeing was pretty cool!

Not legal in Pennsylvania for the spring hunt but handguns are legal for the fall hunt no semi- auto's though.
