Nice pictures and story.  One question,...are there Merriams turkeys in Michigan?  That one bird sure isn't an Eastern....

Southern Michigan bird. I thought the same thing as soon as we got up to him. His wife's bird had the same coloration.

I wonder where that coloration is coming from?  Was there a historical release of Merriams (or perhaps some Rio's) somewhere in that vicinity?  Those birds are definitely not Easterns.  It would be very interesting to know how that coloration got there.
