Remington 870 Express Problem

Hey everyone. I've got a question for you. I am having a problem with my 870.

When it shoots, a massive cloud of smoke comes out of the barrel. I was shooting Remington Nitro Loads. 3" #5 shot and Winchester Longbeard XR 3" #4 loads.

Is this a problem that I need to worry about? Anyone have any ideas? The Nitro loads didn't smoke as bad as the XR. I'm stumped and so is everyone else I have talked to. Thanks!

The Winchester LBs produce a lot of residual from the shot encapsulation. That's my guess is what you're experiencing. Hence, the gun will need a good cleaning.

Does this happen every time you shoot both brands of shells? Have you inspected the bore of your gun to see if it's fouled?
Have you noticed any difference in the recoil or sound of any of those loads? That is always a cause for concern and you should immediately inspect your barrel to make sure there are no obstructions, etc.

With the WLB shells, it's certainly possible to see some of the fractured resin which has turned to buffer but at least in my experience, it's more noticeable to bystanders than to the shooter and it may appear as a white/gray puff.

That's probably what you are seeing but I'd recommend that you remove your barrel and take a good look at it. If it's fouled, I'd "deep clean" it. I'd also see if you're seeing that same "cloud" with both loads.

Better to err on the side of caution.

It's not the same cloud with both loads. The WLB's definitely have more smoke. The nitro's smoke, but not as much. They might even be normal but because I was so in tune with it looking for it that I noticed it more.

I had the barrel off cleaning a month or two ago. I don't think it's that. But I'll clean and look again.

I can't find any thing else online so it has to the #4 load is just way "smokier" than any load I've shot to this point.

Why do you think it's the gun?

Just because it was smoky with both loads and I've never noticed it doing that before.

After talking to different people I'm pretty confident in the fact that it's probably the XR load.

I am going out tomorrow to shoot it and check with multiple loads. Target, pheasant, turkey etc and different sizes to see what happens.

my memory isnt the greatest but i wanna say i remember my nitro 4x5x7s being a little smokier than normal. i killed a bird out of a blind this year...and i remember the smell and smoke lingering for a bit. ive noticed no changes in pattern or what not. still shoots well. maybe the fact that the nitros have the buffer material that is supposed to lube the barrel for the hevishot may cause some of it
