Was just wondering if anyone from the Black Hills area could tell me how the out look for this spring was shaping up. This spring will be me and my brother's first trip to South Dakota. It will also be my second turkey trip out side of Illinois. From what I have see around my area of Illinois the bird population is been on a decline for the past to years. Which is why I was wondering how things are looking up there. I would hate to spend several hundred bucks on the hunting trip just to not see a bird. Mostly I really would like for my brother to have a good chance at one since it would be his first bird ever.

Thanks

Your best bet at getting accurate info is by calling SD Game and Fish.  Try to find a regional office in the area you're looking to hunt and ask them.  They might be able to put you in touch with a local warden or biologist.

Thanks,

Was thinking about giving them a call about a week before I leave. Just thought I'd see if there were any South Dakota boys on here that might be friendly enough to give a rookie a few tips.

My brother lives on the WY side but works on the SD side a lot. He's been sending me a lot of pics of strutters and he's constantly hearing birds gobbling while working during the day. Sounds like lots of birds and sounds like from what he's seeing they're breaking up already. He's planning on hunting it mid May.

Good luck!

Neal,

Thanks for the info. Just what I have been looking to hear. We have never been up to South Dakota before. Really didn't know what to expect as far as turkey population let alone how they are working. Please keep me updated if you here anymore from your brother. My brother and I plan on leaving to head up there the weekend of the 25th of April.
