A few years back I watched a tom breed hens in the middle of a grass field. They were around 200 yards away and for the first two mornings that I hunted them, they would be there at the first hint of light. He never gobbled on the roost, but did so infrequently from the middle of the field with his hens. He would not respond to a call, but left the field in the same direction daily. On the third day, I set up where he typically left the field only to have him and the accompanying hen disappear into the woods before getting to me. I anxiously waited for him to reappear but he didn't. I let out a soft yelp only to have him gobble about 30 yards behind me. He never came in, so I crawled up the slight incline and peek around a tree. There he was and in gun range. We saw each other about the same time, but I was just a tab bit quicker on the draw and tagged him. I even made it to church on time!
