Box call rookie...

Hello, all!

I have a couple of box calls. Love them! The craftsmanship, beauty, ease of use (compared to my pathetic diaphragm calling), and great sound.

1. Why is chalk needed? friction?

2. When and how do you apply new chalk?

3. What type of chalk is best? The stuff on mine is brown.

4. What do you do with high humidity or rain? I was thinking using in under a drape over my knees when it rains.

chalk is needed for friction. with that being said , a well made box will actually call without any on it. of course you want to keep it lightly chalked though. I always have used plain old white chalk. make sure it is pure and has no wax in it.

Talk to whoever made your call and ask what type of chalk they use.  Make sure whatever you use is oil and wax free.  That will kill your call.

When it rains, I put my box call in a 2 gallon zip lock bag.  You can still run it in the bag and it will stay dry. Just make sure your hands are dry also.

Box calls are great, most have fantastic sound. People often think box calls are only for yelping n maybe a little cutting. Watch Halloran use one, he does some good stuff. The only thing I don't think I've ever seen him do is kee kee.

I was thinking of a zip-lock bad, too, West Augusta.
