Need help on Fastfire III Weaver / Picatinny base for Benelli Supernova

Hello,

I had researched quite a bit on red dot units and bases before purchasing a Burris Fastfire III.  Information I gathered suggested Weaver bases are compatible.  I thought I was all set since I already had a Weaver base for my Benelli Supernova.  The Fastfire III protector mount arrived this afternoon and I was all excited to test it out (the red dot unit itself has been sitting for days in NY >:(, thanks USPS).  Problem #1, the mounting bolt goes through the mounting hardware, so it has to go into a slot on the base.  There are only slots on the ends of my Weaver.  I figured I could live with that even though it's not great for a range of adjustment.  Problem #2, the slots aren't big enough to accommodate the bolt, so the mount won't sit flush.  Now I'm bummed!  Questions:

  • My Weaver is 12+ years old.  Do newer Weavers have different sized slots?
  • Weaver does have "tactical" bases but don't list a Supernova as a related model.  I had a heck of a time finding a Weaver to fit in the first place.  Would one of those work even if it doesn't specifically note the Supernova?
  • I have found Picatnny risers that will go on a Weaver.  The shortest is a 1/2" rise.  Think that would be too high?
  • Do I break down and buy a true Picatinny base?  All the pictures look fairly big compared to a Weaver, although I haven't dug deep into dimensions.  I guess I'm old fashioned, but I would prefer it to be low profile.  I'd rather my gun didn't look "tactical."

Thanks!

Update - I went ahead and ordered a Picatinny rail from Optics Planet.  I'm interested to see how it compares to my existing Weaver from an overall size perspective.

I have my FF3 on a weaver rail and it works fine. But I'm sure the slot size could vary from a different manufacturer.
