Single hen decoy setup.

I am getting started in turkey hunting and looking at getting a decoy. I want to get a good decoy, so it looks like it is either going to be a DSD or an Avian. I know the argument (or just discussion) between the two has probably been overdone, so I am not going to go that route. The reason that I mention the brand is because I only have the money for one decoy, and I want it to be a good one. I am looking at getting a single hen. Has anybody had any success with just a single hen? If so, which one did/do you use, feeding, upright, etc...? I am thinking an upright because it seems like it would actually be fairly easy to see, even if they field isn't very short.

If your going to only get one hen decoy I would get either a breeder or feeder. One single upright hen can give the illusion that, that bird sees something it doesn't like or is alert.

If only 1 decoy, get the Avian X Jake decoy
Be the type of person your dog thinks you are.

When I use just a single decoy at a setup it is a dsd jake. If you are set on getting a hen get the dsd leading hen from cabelas.

I was actually going to ask, which should I get, an Avian hen for $40 or a DSD hen for $70? I have a gift card, so $50 off of the price. I am leaning towards the DSD simply because the Avian is a blow up decoy.

It doesn't matter. Buy the cheapest one that you think looks good and are happy with

Deception decoy is also a nice looking decoy in a comparable price to DSD (slightly less expensive than DSD)...

I ended up with the DSD leading hen, cause that is all that was available as turkey season approached last season.  It was not my first choice, but upon reflection, I like the pose, cause it looks good standing, and if you set it directly on the ground without a stake, it looks like a breeder.

In all honesty, I really doubt that using any of the realistic hen decoys would make much of a difference using one over another.

I am still waiting for them to make a hen decoy with her butt in the air and head slightly down...  If I make such a decoy it will be the "Ready-to-breed" decoy.... ;D

In all likelihood, if I had the chance to do it all over, I probably would not even purchase a single hen decoy...   I would have bought a pair (jake & hen)...  I never killed a bird of the single hen decoy, but sure had a few hang up and wait for that hen to come to him once they saw it...

If I were you, and money is an issue, I would buy the Avian X breeding pair...  You'll have a good jake and hen...

Did I do that?

Fly fishermen are born honest, but they get over it.

I would buy a dsd jake.   That's what I'm going to do.

My success went up considerably when I went from a single hen decoy to either no decoys at all or at least a pair.  If I had to go with one and only one it would likely be a jake.

All of the tools, some of the skills!

I have bow killed dozens of birds over a single hen, mine is a stuffer though and the posture is in between a breeder and submissive I would say, most of the birds are within a couple feet of the decoy if not right on top of it!
