Mossberg TruGlo SSX Issue

First post on the forum...been lurking for a long time.  Great info here...love the site.

Have an issue though...I think :)

I just got a Truglo SSX choke in the mail and got to looking at it and it looks like (internally) the choke is shorter than all of my other Mossberg chokes.

When I screw this choke all the way in there seems to be a small (maybe 1/16 or 1/32") gap between the inside of the barrel and end of the choke.  This does not look right and wondered if others who have the SSX noticed the same thing?  Maybe I just got a lemon or maybe this is nothing to be concerned about.

I could not take a pic of the inside of the barrel but I do have a pic of the SSX and the factory choke for comparison.  The factory choke and my JellyHead Maximum are a little longer internally than the SSX.

Take a look...the inside lips that touch the end of the barrel are lined up exactly...may not look that way in the pic but they are.  The bottom of the choke on the SSX is about a 1/16" or so shorter than the stock choke and the JH Max.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hope I am making sense...there is definitely a difference.

Thanks,
Brad

I guess I will call Truglo and see if I can get another one.  Surely all of them are not like this.

Mine is the same way. I have never noticed it before. Mine shoots great so Im not worried about it. As far as being made in China and not having one. Don't pay that any attention. With SSX my 835 shoots some of the best patterns I have ever seen, even on the Internet.

Hey Brad,

First of all, welcome to OG. We're glad you're here.

I understand your question. The only important factor is that the skirt of that choke fits snugly on the shoulder in the counter bore of the barrel. The skirt length is a matter of design by various makers, some are longer than others.

With either your barrel off the gun or safely unloaded, look into the muzzle portion of the barrel. You should be able to see a ring at the base of the choke tube. That means the gas skirt of the choke is smaller than the shoulder. That's very important.

You should also be able to see that it's seated properly. You may need to hold the barrel up to the light or put a piece of white paper in the chamber to catch the light so that you can see it clearly.

From the picture you've posted, all looks well.

By the way, that choke throws some excellent patterns.

Thanks,
Clark

The choke should fit snug up against the barrel on the inside.  If not it will not seal up and gas will leak around it.  Now that want hurt a few shoots just means you have black on outside of choke. Now you put the a lot of shells it just builds up and sometimes choke hard to get out.   Now the only safety thing would be if off center or if gap is so big it could hang wad.   Just after the 1st few shots check to see if wad is hung in barrel.
Tell us just how dead do you want them to be and we will see if we can get that for you.

My ssx in my 935 was threaded bad and it takes a tow truck to take it out...but it shoots such a good pattern I just leave it in.  :smiley-char092:

Made in CHINA!!!!! Nuff said...

What?!?!?! I bought mine from you. Lol. I'll put it up against your Benelli's any day.

SCDieselDawg

My SSX has a small gap between barrel and choke. And it handled more shells last year than most people shoot in a lifetime.  So I wouldn't worry about it.

LOL put a 3" in that thing and bring it on...... Also your ssx is a very old one and I doubt it was Chinese made.

Love my SSX!
Mine shoots some incredible patterns with hevi-13 3-2-7's.
Got mine dipped by lost-n-camo in new MOBU, and love it!
