Bringing the 20 out of retirement

I am wanting to set up the first gun ever bought (870 20 with a 26" barrel) as a  turkey killer. I am looking to set it up for 40 yards. Not really worried about cosmetic things like getting dipped. I have done nothing to this gun in 15 years not really sure where to start. I do have some hevi #7 for it and an undertaker choke(.582 restriction it believe). Kind of need some direction on where to start to set it up. All my other guns I just ran a brush down the barrel, screwed in a choke and got 100 plus at 40 yards and past. I want to do the 20 right so I need some input.

Here is a link to my pattern results for mine. It's just a plain old 870 with a Sumtoy choke and reddot. I'm real pleased with it.

Did you polish the bore, deep clean, or just let it rip?

I would most likely wrap a thin layer of some 0000 steel wool around a plastic brush and put some bore polish on it to run back and forth 50-100 times AFTER I used the bore brush and bore cleaner and some rags until fairly clean.

If the 582 doesn't get you the pattern you desire you may want to go with a 575 or 562 choke.
Those Federal HW #7 shells are getting harder to find in 3" especially.

I deep cleaned it earlier this year.  I have shot 50-75 rnds through it sense then and only dry brushed it and wiped it out.  When I patterned those FHW#7, I only removed the choke and dry brushed out the wadding from it between each shot.

I agree but the Undertaker .582 is a great choke as well. Either way no problems putting down some birds with that combo. Good luck!

I have the ported undertaker choke does that make a difference with the fed shells. Should be fine with the mag blends.

Another option would be Carlson's .575 choke which has worked well for me using Fed HW 7's.

my .575 Carlson likes the 7's and the 6's
