Should I buy a stand alone Gobble call? You don't hear many hunters talk about how an old gobbler came running into their setup using a gobble call!?!?

On a different subject, what is the name of the box call that has 4 different sounds on it if you move the pivot point? RaspyHen1/Old Hen/Young Hen/Raspy Hen2?

Some of my biggest gobblers were taken with a gobble call along with some hen talk. A dominant bird will respond well to a gobble call and come in looking a fight. I like gobbling at a gobbler if all else fails and he's henned up.

yep... only used by me as  "all else fails" call.  Depending on where you are located, birds will react differently.

I agree, it has only worked for me once on a last try throwing up a "Hail Mary" pass. But it did work! He couldn't take the gobble in his territory.

DO NOT USE A GOBBLE CALL ON PUBLIC LAND...especially up North where hunters tend to hunt close together :OGturkeyhead:...... It's a last resort and works sometimes but I rarely use one. Just something else to carry.

ol bob

The call you ask about is a dial tone other than used the only place to get one is Billy Buice

gobble calls can work like all else right place right time

Old Gobbler

I use them to roost birds and it hits them to sound off a gobble at fly up time -- doesn't work all the time , but when it does , it works quite well

Oh yeah...Gobble calls do work, esp. on old gobblers or dominant ones. I've used them to bring in gobblers that just wouldn't come with anything else I threw at them...A wing slapping against brush along with some fighting purrs works great. I've even brought in recalcitrant ones with a wing dragging along the ground and shaken back and forth to sound like a strutting gobbler (like when they "shiver" their feathers) along with a gobble tube. I'd feel lost without one...

If it wasnt for a gobble call i wouldnt have killed my bird this spring so ima firm believer lol! he came right in with hens!

But to the OP's question, when exactly would you decide to use a gobble call?  And more importantly, when would you NOT use one?

Bird hung up at 80 yards?  Tom with hens early in the season?  Group of bachelor toms late in the season?

For those of you who have used them with success, what was the situation that it was proven successful?
Did I do that?

Fly fishermen are born honest, but they get over it.

when all else fails use a gobble call then i use a fighting purr if that doesnt work

I think the gobble tube works well if you can convince a gobbler that an interloper is about to take "his" hens. The sequence I usually use is some aggressive hen yelps and some cutting or cackling. I'll do that maybe twice. A few seconds after the cackling I'll make a call with the gobble tube. I'll do this for three or four sequences, then I'll be quiet. My thought is it sounds like a hen is calling and makes contact with a gobbler other than your target gobbler. They seemingly move toward one another and meet. That's when they quiet down and he thinks they're getting down to "business." Lots of times he'll gobble trying to get the hen to come to him. Problem is, he "knows" "his" hen is being romanced at that very moment by another gobbler. He wants to break it up so he goes to where the action is. A few excited cackles for him on his way in makes him think he still has a chance...Like everyone says, be aware of other hunters! Set  your decoys, esp. male decoys, where you're protected by a big tree at your back and you can see any "hunter" stalking up on them from the front or sides. Be particularly aware of line of fire between you and male decoys (watch areas that, if a "hunter" were to fire on your decoy, you could see him/her before he/she shoots). I've been doing this for quite a few seasons and haven't had any problems but there is risk so be aware...It will work if you set up the right ruse and the gobbler is weak/interested/receptive...Whatever you might call it...Think of it like this. You "own" all the girls in town. Esp. that hottie down the street. Some out of towner shows up and he's doing o.k. with "your" hottie (of course, as we said, they're all yours). You can't see it but you can hear what's going on. You're 18 and testosterone is just oozing out of you. You're about to open a can of whoop a$$...That's what you try to set up...
