The Law

Well, I hate to stir the pot, but I have hunted public land for 20 years now, and I guess it just isn't that big of a deal to me that I have to park where someone else has already parked and go hunt where someone else is hunting. That's fantastic if you are the first person at the gate. Then go hunt. However, if I pull up to a gate, and there are already trucks parked there, well I just go find another place.  It's not worth it to me to chance screwing up someone else's hunt or risk the safety of others so that I can shoot a bird. Furthermore, I guess I'm just a little old fashioned, but then to go and spread the word about how funny it is that somebody is going to be mad and how you put feathers and notes on someone's car. To me that should be the definition under the word "petulant".

Congrats on the birds. I'm not trying to take that away from you.  Glad you tagged out and did it quickly. That's awesome. I've done well in Mississippi this year, and stayed on public ground the whole time.  I've gotten to watch a lot of birds die on Noxubee, Choctaw, and Tombigbee National Forest land this year, including one that I watched die this morning at 0930.  However, I took a guy and we were at the gate at 0400, and each truck that arrived after us slowed down, saw we were there, and using ETIQUETTE, went to a different location.

I pride myself on public land hunting only.  I hunt private maybe 1-2 times a year as a guest, and can't remember the last time I shot a bird on pvt.  I always let the owner or leaseholder do the shooting. I've killed plenty of those ole toms and like to see others hunt or kill them. I did have one run-in with a couple of rednecks from Louisville MS this year, and they were the definition of whitetrash. They used the old quotes like "this public land man...we can hunt any where".... etc etc. Well those two fatties had a long walk out that day.

I just don't agree with anyone acting like an idiot or risking safety in the woods anymore. It's not nice, nor does it show signs of intelligence. Unfortunately, I've seen behavior like that in each state that I hunt every year. Perhaps I was raised differently. Also, I noticed that several of the people who said you da man or any of that crap have also complained about people coming into areas that they hunted.  Man...talk about a hypocrite.

Almost forgot...doing stuff like that on public land in places like southeast Arkansas duck woods or Louisiana will ensure your Honda Civic doesn't roll out of there like it rolled in there.

I couldn't agree more!

Sorta w the law on this one. I'm happy you tagged out on public land in 3 days. It is an accomplishment for sure and something to be proud of as well. However, after 20yrs of hunting turkeys and hunting w some real killers in MS I've learned a few things. Screwing w people on public land is a bad idea, especially in the southeast. Another is don't toot your horn too much today bc tomorrow or the next 30 hunts could all be butt kickers.

Again, good job but a little more respect for fellow turkey hunters and some humility goes a long ways in the turkey woods.

I want to make clear that I am new to this forum, and I am NOT trying to start trouble. I just wanted to point out a couple of things. I also want to make clear that I am NOT hating on you for shooting any birds.  I could care less how many get shot. I'm glad they died. They need to die. That's why we hunt. Wanted to make that clear in case anyone thought that I said what I did because I was jealous or a negative person. I'm not.  I've killed probably 150+ birds in my life, and I know a foolish and dangerous hunter/ hunting situation when I see one.  Let's all take a lesson from this, and make sure that we are here to enjoy loud gobbles and long spurs for many years to come. Instead of boasting, let's thank The Lord above that we are able to enjoy this great sport.

Understand and appreciate all opinions. Just wanted to clarify, this public land has a sign in map with courtesy pins for locations so that it helps prevent other hunters from walking on you.. There is one common parking lot with 5-6 trucks at this location on any given weekend. The feather was all in humor. It was more of a joking 'got lucky' that he said to me than an arrogant one. This isn't like a public land with 50 pull offs. I have more respect for hunters than most, and will gladly guide someone before I kill it. I appreciate your advise and am glad to have others in the woods who have respect for hunters, but please ask the whole story before being judgmental. I am not one to toot my horn, but enjoy reading other people's experiences, so I posted my own. Again, if it was a small public area, with no map, I would have gladly went to the next spot. FYI, day one I was the first there and had 4-5 more trucks pull I after mine. I know the dangers of public hunting, but I do appreciate your concerns and mean no disrespect.

Well I tell ya what...well said man. I've done some pretty rude stuff in my days and regret them all. Glad to hear that was a general parking area. Sounds like you thought it out before going and piling up on someone and being unsafe!
Also, glad to hear you are open to criticism. I too am always open to criticism. Lord knows we all need it. Good job man. 3/3 is tough.
