Need some advice on poor patterns

This is only my second post and I have a lot of questions so please be patient. Ok I have a super black eagle 2 with a 28" barrel, this is my waterfowl gun but I paid a lot of money for it so I'm gonna get as much use out of it as possible! I just got a carlsons choke tube for it that is .665 so I tried some #5 shot from a couple different companies like federal, Winchester supremes, Remington nitros and I tried the new long beard loads and they weren't very good. At 20 yds they were pretty tight but after that they really started to open up. So I have ol reliable 870 with an undertaker with the same constriction of .665 and tried them out of this gun as we'll and we're horrible as we'll. So what would you say might be the deal? All of these are all 3" shells, any help and advice would be very grateful, thanks!

Is your barrel clean? If not deep clean your barrel and then try it out.

I'll try that then, I run a bore snake through them every once in awhile but that's about all. I'll get some bore cleaner and really give it the once over and try to pattern again.

First of all, Welcome to OG. We're glad you here and glad to see you posting. I know everyone will do their best to be of help to you.

I would second that recommendation for "deep cleaning" your bores. Your Benelli has a chrome-lined bore and can look clean when in fact it may have a good bit of gunk in it.

That's a great gun and that 28" barrel can really do exceptionally well. I've been shooting Benellis for many years and see some excellent patterns with the proper choke and shotshells.

There are other chokes and shells that would probably give you better patterns but I'd start by deep cleaning the bore and trying what you have. You can always purchase another choke or some other shells but this is the least expensive route to go and you may find that you have all you need.
