Hunted with a youngster during the Illinois youth season this past weekend. Had a large Tom fly down into the field. He immediately started yelping louder than i have ever heard. Once he heard my call he came running at a sprint. He would alternate between a loud erratic yelp and gobbling. It was quite a sight to see and a great experience for the young hunter.

I've been doing this for 29 seasons and I've seen hens strut, jakes yelp, and all sorts of other stuff, but never a mature gobbler yelp. I know it does happen. I've just never had the chance to witness it.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons. However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

A few years ago while bow hunting deer, I heard some "throaty" yelps coming toward my stand. To my surprise two gobblers came walking down the deer trail yelping every once in awhile and finally flew up to roost about 50 yards from me. Pretty cool what ya see out in the woods....

I have heard one yelp in 40 years and it was scary loud . He had just whipped a bird in a huge fight when he started yelping and it was unbelievably loud,

Last year I had a 2 yr old gobble twice in the tree before he flew down, when he pitched out he proceeded to yelp back at me. I started jake yelping and he marched on in, yelping the whole way. I was convinced he was a jake until I saw the dude. He entered a pasture, strutted once and kept coming. He was tasty.

I heard one yelping like crazy last year. He was separated from a big flock of turkeys and was yelping the whole way as he got close to them.

Never heard it. I have seen plenty of hens in strut though!

Why shoot a 3.5"? Because they don't make a 4".
