I like to run a round tip (no flare) Harold Fowler striker. I personally use purpleheart (Osage Orange top) and red brazilian chestnut (one piece) strikers for a Lonnie Sneed Hot hen slate. Our birds here in North Florida really like that combination. In my personal opinion it is easier to initially learn to use a flared-tip striker, but as you progress it seems like you can produce a clearer and more precise sound from just a round tip, but that's just me.
