Friction Calls Used in Calling Contests

Does anybody know what calls have won any friction calling contests lately? Also, what pot call surface is used the most?

I'd be willing to bet Pat Strawser more than likely used Strawsers Custom Calls to win the Grand Nationals this year.

My son is like most callers with a call or two from a lot of different makers. I know for a fact that before a contest he goes through roughly 40 calls to narrow down to the 15 or so he'll bring with during that contest season. He's got a few calls from Strawser, Hook's, Hanks, Scott Berry, Woodhaven, Wall's, and Sadler McGraw that always make his final cut.

As for surfaces depends what calls they are doing. Competitive callers will use different calls for each call asked. Not very often are they using the same pot and striker for Kee Kee Runs as the would for Plain Yelp or Purr. Not saying it isn't possible but highly unlikely. Every call in a callers bag has a certain call it's going to be used for. Kee kee's are usually aluminum, cluck and purr are usually slate, crystal or glass for cutting; slate, alum, glass and crystal are all used for the variety of yelping scenarios asked. That is just a basic guideline not a steadfast rule by any means. I'd bet that even if you found 2 callers at a contest using the same call they will both be using different strikers.

I'm not say'n who but a few weeks back I saw a very well respected caller using a HS Strut Black Widow glass.  It really comes down to ability more than the call.

That's southland yellow hart crystal is a mighty fine call. Ran one at the convention and it's top notch.

I know of one event that my glass over slate two sider was used. Haven't kept up with the guy to know how frequently he has done it

When I was blowing and going winning everything under the sun in friction, I used a Woodhaven Vision, Legend slate, a purr pot that I made, and a keekee disc that I bought from Roger Parks.  I still use the kee disc, and purr pot.  But other calls now are some prototypes. 

This years Grand National was won by Pat Strawser running his own calls.  Steve Morganstern was runner up running a Hooks call that Steve designed and makes for them.  I was third, and ran my stuff, Scott Wilhelm was 4th and i don't know what he had,  Bobby Woods was 5th and ran calls that he had made this fall ( good Stuff by the way).

At the world in Stuttgart two weeks ago,  Jason Conrad was first running the new Pollards Elite calls,  Steve Morganstern was second,  Mike Longnecker was 3rd running some Hooks calls,  I was tied for 4th with Calvin Perryman who was running some of my calls, and Tanner Norris was next running Roger Parks Calls.

It has a lot to do with who is running the call, but the callers go out there with the best that they can find.  But friction calls can be a lot like mouth calls, what works for me, wont work for you.  Example: the call that I won the GNCC with several years ago was bought by a customer, he sent it back and said it was a piece of junk, I won every major contest over the next two yrs with it.

I dont know if there is a proper call making term for it, but I refer to calls as tight or loose.  Loose calls the calling surface doesnt touch the outside lip, I can run those pretty darn good,  calls that have the calling surface touching the outside lip, I dont get any rasp out of the call.  Pot calls can be somewhat simialr to finding mouth calls that work for you.
