Mossberg 500 Opinions

I am wondering what opinions I might gather on a Mossy 500 on here.  I had an 835 and sold it.  I did not like the LOP and the forearm felt like it was a long stretch for me to reach.  I am not a small guy but something just felt weird about the length of stroke to eject a 3 1/2" shell while waterfowl hunting.  I guess I have been spoiled by shooting the super mag automatics.
Anyway, back to the original question.  How reliable are they, and what kind of patterns can be expected?  I thought about trying to get a Mossy 500 as a turkey gun and a bottom of the duck boat gun.  I have a Win. 1300 and several turkey chokes for it. I figured it would save me some money, and time, since they both use the same chokes.  Any help would be appreciated.

my son has a 500 12 ga with a polished 24in barrel that will shoot 200 in the 10 all day with the jellyhead 660 and magblend 3in, very reliable goes boom every time and its heavy enough it doesn't kick him to hard but light enough for him to hold up, by the way he is twelve and is a turkey killin machine

Mossberg 500 is a good shotgun and will make a great turkey gun,I carried one for 6 years while I was employed by Uncle Sam (Army)
Have shot and hunted with Mossberg shotguns all of my life.

Great gun for turkeys. Put a Jelly Head .660 and hunt with Hevi-13 3-2-6's or 3-2-7's.
If you are gonna shot lead, and keep it under 40, try the Winchester Longbeard's.

I had a 500 slug gun and loved it.  My buddy got a Mossberg 535 for turkeys. You might check into that one too!

One of the biggest mistakes I ever made was selling Mountainburd on here my pre-1997 mossy 500.  It had the hideous green and black camo with synthetic stock.  That gun was built like a tank unlike these newer ones.  I was not into patterning like I am today but that gun with 2oz of 4 shot killed everything that was in front of it.  Great gun.  Go for it!

My current turkey gun is a Mossberg 500. I use the factory turkey choke and Remington Nitro 3" # 5 loads. I use the factory choke because I tried it and was pleased with it. I use the Nitro loads because of all the loads I tried with this gun and this choke, it liked the Nitros best.

I patterned this gun and was very pleased from 25 to 40 yards. Took my first bird with it last spring. I estimated 30 yards, but the shot was actually 35. The bird dropped like a rock.

There are hunters who carry better and more expensive guns, with better and more expensive chokes, shooting better and more expensive loads. My gun, with its factory choke and $2.50 shells, shoots fantastic, and I'm pretty sure the turkeys don't care how much your equipment costs.

I can beat that I carried an M-60 Machinegun and a M-203 Grenade Launcher when I worked for Uncle Sam many years ago. All kidding aside the Mossberg 500 is a fine, workable and reliable workhorse.

Well, let's see.  Its one of the 2 most widely used and sold shotguns in history, second only to the 870 by a small margin.  It can be modified into any number of different configurations to suit the need of any hunter in the woods and they just plain Work.  Yup...I think you're good with a 500.
